DOYLE, Arthur Conan]. Pair of surgical scissors, formerly used by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Circa 1875 - 1900? 6½ (16 mm.) in length. Two steel blades held together by a single rivet, iron cast, circular fingerholes, marked with small stamped design of a key, above the imprint of "Geo. Butler & Co., Sheffield" on one blade. Framed.

Two steel blades held together by a single rivet, iron cast, circular fingerholes, marked with small stamped design of a key, above the imprint of "Geo. Butler & Co., Sheffield" on one blade. Framed. Doyle had studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh (1876-1881) and practiced in Aston, Birmingham, Sheffield and other venues. He began to publish short fiction at that time and in September 1879 published his first medical article, "Gelsemium as a Poison" in the British Medical Journal . Provenance : Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- Dame Jean Conan Doyle (1912-1997), given to Julian Wolfe, Commissioner of the Baker Street Irregulars in New York -- presented by him to -- Norman S. Nolan, M.D. on his graduation from medical school. -- Diane Nolan
