Doyle écrit à un critique afin de contester un jugement sur sa pièce : il prend tout particulièrement la défense de son sous-titre « Une pièce de la moralité moderne » , en partie destinée à éviter la déception d’un public qui « aurait pu se croire sur le point d’assister (par exemple) à un récit policier » . Il continue en soulignant que la « thèse philosophique » de la pièce vise à exprimer le fait que « le chagrin est le véritable objectif de la vie » , et rappelle en postscriptum non sans satisfaction le commentaire d’un autre critique selon lequel « la pièce est conçue pour capter l’intelligence à travers les émotions » . Doyle writes to a reviewer to rebut a critique of his play: in particular, he defends his subtitle ‘a modern morality play’, intended in part to avoid the disappointment of an audience who might have been ‘under the impression that they were about to see (for example) a detective tale’. He goes on to note that the ‘philosophic thesis’ of the play is the proposition that ‘sorrow is the real object of life’, and in a postscript records with satisfaction a comment by another critic that ‘the play is designed to get at the intelligence through the emotions’. The Fires of Fate , adapted from Doyle’s own short story The Tragedy of the Korosko (1897) ran at the Lyric and subsequently the Adelphi Theatre, London, between 15 June and 9 October 1909, with a brief revival the following year after a provincial tour.
