Beschreibung:

DOUGLAS, NORMAN Collection of nine autograph letters and two autograph postcards to the poet Walter Lowenfels . Mostly Florence, Pistoia and other locations: each with a day and month but only two dated with a year, 1927 and 1929 respectively. All but one initialed "ND" the other "N". Various sizes, largest letter 10 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches (27.5 x 21 cm); postcards 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (14 x 9 cm). Usual folds, some marks from paperclips, a few creases or short tears, overall very good. A colorful group of letters from the exiled author to the young poet Walter Lowenfels, who had just arrived in Europe in 1926. Douglas writes on various issues such as life in Italy (I am getting despondent. That and the mosquitos and hellish prices in this ... country; Food here worse than ever. It means that after each meal, we have to go out and eat another); his publishers and the offering of literary advice (By all means get in touch with Secker, and beware! He is a slimy little brigand); the Paris scene (And avoid the American[s] there: they are far worse than the real article); and on introducing Lowenfels to his son and daughter-in-law who are visiting Paris (If you meet them, don't dream of paying anything for him: nothing whatever: they are staying at the Ritz with her people, who stink of money).
