Douglas M Rawlings (1921 2003) oil on board 'Landscape of the China Clay open mining works near St Austell, Cornwall, showing the engine house, Cornish Alps or white mountains of spoil heaped on the horizon', 120cm x 90 cm (128cm x 108cm including frame). signed 'Rawlings' set in a hardwood frame, Provenance; Exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art in 1956 and the Royal West of England Academy in 1957. Purchased shortly after the artists death, in June 2004 at the Bristol Guild Gallery, Park Street, Bristol. The back of the painting bears a sticker printed with the artists name and address in Clifton, Bristol. Douglas Rawlings was a Bristol painter born in 1921. He studied at the West of England College of Art, then part of the Royal West of England Academy. There was a retrospective of his work in Auckland, New Zealand in 2015. Works previously sold at auction include: Spatial Image I and II, (Bonham's 1995) and Clifton Down (2000). China Clay or Kaolin was traditionally used in the porcelain and paper industries and now has many other uses including in the manufacture of high quality paint. China Clay mining is one of the main industries of Cornwall. The Eden Project was created in a disused China Clay Pit. The Wheal Martyn Clay Works is a museum dedicated to China Clay in St Austell.
