Title: Double Image by Salvador Dali: Apparition of the Invisible Bust of Voltaire. Printer's Proof and Puzzle - Both Signed. Author: Dali, Salvador Place: New York Publisher: Springbok Editions Inc. Date: 1965 Description: Lithographed jigsaw puzzle in original circular box, 14¼ in diameter, puzzle is 20¼ when assembled; this copy sealed inside (later) shrink-wrap. Signed by Dali in ink in large letters directly on the rear of the printed box. Also, printer's proof sheet for both the puzzle and the puzzle box. Approximately 25x38", signed by Dali in ink at lower right. Puzzle image appears to be a group of women emerging from a tunnel but at closer range they transform into an "Apparition of the Invisible Bust of Voltaire". This is the first commissioned art puzzle made by Springbok Editions, later a division of Hallmark. There were two versions (issues) produced, this being version #1, with bottom of box containing a photo from the Bust of Voltaire. The other version has a photo of the puzzle and of Dali. Provenance: From the collection of Springbok Editions founders, Robert and Katie Lewin. According to their daughter, Laurie: “It was an enchanting little business that took a high leap in the public eye when in 1964 Bob and Katie Lewin published a Jackson Pollack image as a puzzle. Using the huge buzz over the Pollack, they then approached Dali…[who] agreed…with two stipulations: the Lewins needed to immediately produce a cage for [his] ocelot…and that they write an agreement between them that would be no more than one double spaced page.” Lot Amendments Condition: Puzzle box fine (puzzle not examined); proof sheet foxed and with a short tear at upper margin not affecting images. Item number: 197006
