First published to great acclaim in a periodical in 1846, it continued to be revised by Dostoevsky for the subsequent editions of 1847, 1860 and 1865. This edition was published by Stellovsky, with whom Dostoevsky entered into a contract soon after his brother Mikhail died, burdening the author with his debts and dependents. The contract stipulated that if Dostoevsky did not complete a new novel for Stellovsky by 1 November 1866, all rights to all Dostoevsky's past and future works would belong to Stellovsky.
