DORSTEN, THEODOR. Botanicon, continente Herbarum, aliorumque Simplicium, quorum usus in Medicinis est, descritpiones, & Iconas ad uium effigiatas. Frankfurt: Christian Egenolff, (March 1540). [ Bound with :] DIOSCORIDES, PEDACIUS. De medicinali materia libri sex. Frankfurt: Christian Egenolff, (April 1549). 2 vols. in one, folio, 302 x 189 mm., contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, covers panelled with floral rolls, rolls of saints, and heads-in rolls, the date 1569 stamped on upper cover, one (of two) metal catches, lacking clasps, covers shellacked, rubbed, lower cover wormed, slight soiling to first title, worm tracks to gutter margins of first 30 leaves, affecting a few letters, Dioscorides lacks 4 preliminary leaves (Aa2-5) and final blank, title-leaf with 5-inch neatly repaired tear, worming to second half of the Dioscorides, increasing toward the end . Dorsten: FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, title with three woodcuts of plants, 320 woodcuts in the text, of which 284 of plants (space for woodcut on K6v left blank), woodcut initials. Dioscorides: Second Egenolff edition, third illustrated edition, the first with the commentary of Valerius Cordus, edited by Walter Ryff, roman and italic type, printer's device on title, 786 woodcuts in the text. Adams D-849; Nissen BBI 552; NLM/Durling 1203. A Sammelband of two of Egenolff's Latin botanical publications. Dorsten's herbal is really Rösslin's Kreutterbuch in disguise: "on Rösslin's death the herbal portion of the work was reedited by Theodore Dorsten, [translated into Latin], and entitled the Botanicon , probably to make it seem to be a new production" (Anderson, p. 156). With its Latin text, and plant captions in Greek, Latin and German, the edition was intended for a more scholarly audience than Egenolff's usual vernacular editions. The second Egenolff edition of Dioscorides is enlarged with Valerius Cordus's important commentary, and contains 191 more woodcuts than the 1543 edition (Adams D-664; NLM/Durling 1152). Provenance : Early inscription on first title of Balthazar Ruihan(?), other early effaced inscriptions, some early German marginalia -- Large woodcut of Dr. Georg Mayern of Würzburg cut out from a book and pasted down on verso of title -- early inkstamp inkstamp on title, "...Sidera Peregrina..." (partly illegible) -- Unidentified 17th or 18th-century armorial inkstamp at end of Dorsten preface -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate and blindstamp.
