Dorothea Lange (American, 1895-1965) Thirteen Year Old Daughter of Negro Sharecropper Planting Sweet Potatoes, Olive Hill, North Carolina, 1939, printed later. Identified on a label affixed to the back of the mount inscribed "Negative in file of D.L." in black ink and typed with Lange's Berkeley, California, address. Gelatin silver print, 8 5/8 x 8 5/8 in. (22.0 x 22.0 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Mounted, vertical crease l.l. corner, cluster of unobtrusive pinpoint indentations in u.l. quadrant, minor losses at corners. Provenance: Descended within the family of the artist. N.B. Dorothea Lange made this photograph while working for the Farm Security Administration, a federal agency established to document the effects of the Depression on the rural poor, as well as the government programs established to assist them. In the image, Lange crafts a portrait out of the arm, legs, and dusty feet of a sharecropper's daughter who plants sweet potatoes in holes dug by her father.
