Beschreibung:

DORAT, Claude Joseph (1734-80). Les Baisers, précédés du mois de Mai, poëme , The Hague and Paris: Lambert & Delalain, 1770. 8° (210 x 142mm.), engraved title by N. Ponce, additional printed title in red and black with vignette by J. Aliamet, one engraved plate by Longueil, 44 head- and tailpieces, all after Eisen (occasional faint spotting or thumb-soiling), blue morocco by Lortic, sides elaborately decorated in gilt with wide tooled border of fleurons with vases and small birds, circular cornerpieces of birds on fleurons in vases, spine with raised bands, lettered in two, the others elaborately gilt with central floral motif, floral cornerpieces with circular bird tools in each, g.e. Provenance: Robert Hoe. "The twenty-two headpieces and twenty-two tailpieces with which Eisen adorned Dorat's hundred odd pages of text turn the book into a veritable paean to voluptuousness. And far from being a handicap, the small scale of the illustrations intensifies their appeal ... This triumph of miniature art is the apotheosis of the vignette" (Ray). Two editions were published, this being the earlier edition with titles in red and black, and numerous mispaginations in Mois de Mais . Cohen-de-Ricci 308-311; Ray French 31; Sander 495.
