DORAT, Claude Joseph (1734-80). Fables nouvelles , The Hague and Paris: Delalain, 1773-[75]. 2 volumes in one, 8° (188 x 127mm.), 2 engraved titles by de Ghendt, additional printed title with large engraved vignette by Ponce, 2 engraved plates by Delaunay, 99 vignettes and 99 culs-de-lampe, all after Marillier (a few marginal tears, occasional very light soiling or a few spots), crimson morocco by Bedford, triple gilt fillet border on sides, spine with raised bands in 6 compartments, lettered in two, the others decorated with a central floral tool and foliate cornerpieces, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: Frank Linsly James (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE of Marillier's "masterpiece of miniature illustration", with page 162 in the corrected state. "In the genial verses which Dorat wrote in praise of Marillier, his emphasis was exclusively on the artist's masterly depiction of animals" (Ray). Cohen-de-Ricci 313-315; Ray French 43A; Sander 508.
