DOPPELMAYR Johann Gabriel (1677-1750). Globi Coelestis in Tabulas Planas Redacti , Pars III and IV from Hemisphaerium coeli . Nuremberg: Johann Baptist Homann, 1730. 2 double-page hand-coloured engraved celestial charts, with titles and tables in green, pink and yellow wash, stars in gilt (Pars III trimmed just into text at lower margin, a few short tears to lower margin of both maps with old repairs), 490 x 590mm. A FINELY COLOURED PAIR OF DOPPELMAYR'S CELESTIAL CHARTS issued by Homann. Doppelmayr, cartographer, astronomer and mathematician, held the post of Professor of Mathematics at the Aegidien Gymnasium, Nuremberg from 1704-1750. A prolific globe-maker, Doppelmayr produced celestial charts from 1704 onwards, in his determination to explain the Copernican-Huygens world system. Homann, one of the main publishers of astronomical maps in 18th-century Germany, settled in Nuremberg in 1688 and established his publishing house there. (2)
