Contemporary green half morocco, spines gilt. Condition : final text leaf and free endpaper detached in vol.I, occasional light spotting; rubbed and scuffed, joints worn and slightly split, head of spine of vol. I with small section detached. Provenance : Ed. Barclay (early signatures); Lynn Abbott Trust. a fine tall set, in good condition internally, with beautifully-finished plates. This set is a rare off-shoot of a larger work with a similar title. Donovan published The Naturalist's Repository, or Miscellany of Exotic Natural History in parts between 1823 and 1827, with 180 plates. It is normally found bound in 5 volumes. As the title shows, the present work is complete as is, and stands as an example of the opportunistic publishing of the period as well as a spectacular work on the exotic natural history from around the world: the plates include 23 butterlies and moths, 20 birds, 23 shells, 3 monkeys, 2 beetles and 1 of fish.
