Donald Teskey RHA (b.1956) Coastline Acrylic on card, 70 x 79cm (27½ x 31'') Signed It was in 1996 that Donald Teskey first visited the Ballinglen Art Foundation in Ballycastle in NorthMayo. As anyone familiar with the area will know, the coastline landscape there is dramatic anduncompromising. It is vast in scale and relentlessly weather-beaten. Beautiful, but in a stark, evencruel way, it feels as if everything extraneous has been simply scoured away by time, wind and rain. Though it wasnt immediately apparent, Teskeys first visit was absolutely decisive in terms of thedevelopment of his work since. He has been back to Ballinglen several times and he has also beeninspired by other coastal landscapes, in West Cork including the sea around Cape Clear Island and Kerry, where he has worked at Ballinskelligs. In other words, he has maintained a curiousbalance in his work between southwest and northwest coasts. Poet Theo Dorgan noted If you stand in close to the surfaces you can see in the layerings and shifts of focus how tone, knife-scrape and brush-stroke follow and leap from one passage to the next, you can sense the mind and hand following paint and mark, in a kind of dance across the surface, creating sub surfaces, dips, hollows and swatches so that the very skin of paint is delightedly animate with itself. Donald Teskey was born in Co Limerick in 1956. After graduating from the Limerick College of Art & Design with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1978 he began his successful career as an artist, exhibiting throughout Ireland as well as in the USA, UK, Germany and Canada. His talent has been rewarded on many occasions; as early as 1981 he received a prize for drawing at the Limerick EV+A and in 1995 he was presented with the Fergus ORyan Award at the RHA Annual Exhibition. This pattern has continued to the present day with residency programmes in Cill Rialaig, Kerry and the Josef Albers Foundation, CT, USA. He was elected an Academician of the RHA in 2003 and a member of Aosdana in 2006. His work is included in many prominent public and private collections in Ireland and worldwide. Among the public/corporate collections his work is to be found in The Arts Council of Ireland, IMMA, OPW, the University of Limerick and Irish Life Assurance to name but a few.
