Larrey was the surgeon-in-chief of all of Napoleon’s armies between the Italian campaigns of 1797 and Waterloo in 1815, during which time he transformed the nature of army surgery into a recognisably modern form, with an emphasis on mobility, swift triage and an equal treatment of casualties, regardless of nationality. Larrey was characteristically in the thick of the action at Waterloo, where according to some accounts the Duke of Wellington directed his guns not to fire in his direction; having been captured in the retreat, he was (according to his biographer Leroy-Dupré (1862)), spared execution and released after a personal intervention from Blücher, whose son’s life he had saved during the Austrian campaign.
