DODOENS, REMBERT. Histoire des plantes, en laquelle est contenue la description entiere des herbes...Nouuellement traduite de bas Aleman en François par Charles de l'Escluse. Antwerp: Jan van der Loë 1557. Folio, 288 x 195mm. (11 3/8 x 7 3/4 in.), eighteenth-century red morocco, covers gilt-panelled, spine in six gilt-panelled compartments, two gilt-lettered, the remainder with gilt floral tooling, g.e., turn-ins gilt, original blue endpapers, slight dent to upper cover, joints and extremities rubbed, a few scratches to covers, title and first few leaves slightly discolored, minor creasing to first two leaves, rust hole to F5-6 affecting five letters, four very minor marginal tears, occasional offsetting or showthrough of coloring, some slight marginal foxing . 2 parts in one, continuous pagination (part 2: "Petit Recueil, auquel est contenue la description d'aucunes gommes et liqueurs, provenans tant des arbres, que des Herbes..."), errata leaf at end; Roman type, index of Greek names, index of Dutch names in bâtarde type; general title within woodcut border by Hans Liefrinck showing scenes of classical mythology, small woodcut on "Petit Recueil" title, 840 small woodcuts of plants (including omitted woodcut on verso of errata leaf), TITLES AND WOODCUTS COLORED. FIRST FRENCH EDITION of Dodoens's Cruÿdeboeck , published by Loë in [1552-] 1554, illustrated with the same woodcuts, most of which were previously used in Michael Isingrin's octavo editions of Fuchs's De historia stirpium , plus 133 cuts new to this edition. Dodoens was "the first of the great Flemish botanists" (Hunt, p. 77), and although his works were still organized according to the traditional Dioscoridean classification schemes, he was the first to concentrate on plants of the Netherlands. His work was highly influential in England, in the form of Henry Lyte's English translation of the present French version, first published in 1578. Adams D718; Nissen BBI 510; NLM/Durling 1178.
