Translated by Henry Lyte (c. 1529-1607). Antwerp: Jan van der Lo, for Gerard Dewes in London, 1578. 2 o (286 x 190 mm). Gothic type, some roman and italic. Title within historiated woodcut border with mythological scenes, by A. Nicolai after P. van der Borcht, woodcut arms of the translator on title verso, woodcut portrait of Dodoens holding a flower, 870 quarter-page text woodcuts, printer's woodcut device on last page. Traces of coloring to 5 cuts. Title and colophon without the printed correction slips. (Washed and pressed, marginal restoration to title-leaf, first 3 and last 11 leaves rehinged cropping a few letters on last page of table, marginal repairs to last dozen leaves, fore-margin of index leaf 3X6 restored shaving a number on recto, bottom margin of D2 cut short, minor staining in quires 3P-3Q.) 19th-century English russet morocco, covers panelled in gold and blind, blind-stamped central azur cartouche, gold floral tools at corners, spine similarly decorated and lettered in gold, gilt edges (spine faded, extremities scuffed, inner hinges split). Provenance : Mittie Arnold (bookplate). First edition in English of Dodoens' Cruydeboeck , printed by van der Lo in 1554. Lyte's translation is from Clusius' French version (1557, also by Lo), which he carefully compared to the "last Dutch copy," as he states in a note on p. 345. Apparently Dodoens sent additional material after Lytes' translation was completed: one of the preliminary commendatory verses to Lyte's text, by Thomas Newton, mentions "additions" sent by Dodoens, "for to augment Lytes travell": these were incorporated into the text. "Dodoens was the first of the great Flemish botanists, and... he helped to forward the growing interest in classification which had begun to be evident as early as 1539 in Bock's Neu Kreuterbuch " (Hunt 67). Most of the woodcuts of the English edition were printed from the blocks of the previous Flemish and French editions. Modelled after the cuts in Fuchs' reduced format editions (1545 and later), they were probably cut by Arnaud Nicolai after Pieter van der Borcht Henrey 110; Hunt 132; Johnston, Cleveland Collections 118; Nissen BBI 516; Pritzel 2345; Stafleu & Cowan 1488.
