DODO -- OWEN, Sir Richard (1804-1892). Memoir of the Dodo (Didus ineptus, Linn.)... with an historical introduction by the late William John Broderip. Letterpress slip on verso of dedication, as issued. 12 lithographic plates, 2 hand-coloured, 10 uncoloured, 1 of these folding, extra-illustrated with a related als from the Duke of Northumberland to Owen and an unused printed 'Zoological Society' pass, both mounted on front pastedown. (The folding plate with 200mm. repaired tear, 4 plates spotted, preliminaries misbound before title.) Original green cloth (rebacked with sections of original spine laid down, inner hinges repaired). Provenance : Richard Owen (als, unused pass signed by Owen); Arthur J.B. Adams (signatures). FIRST EDITION WITH AN INTERESTING PROVENANCE: Owen's interleaved copy with his autograph notes is in the Natural History Museum library, but this copy may well have been his secondary 'author's copy'. The work consists of an historical survey of what was known about the dodo (largely written by Broderip), followed by a description of a series of bones discovered on Mauritius in 1865. In the letter, dated 8 March 1853, the Duke of Northumberland lets Owen know that 'The Dutch Picture in which is a representation of the Dodo is at Messrs. Colnaghi.. who will send it when & where you please, in order that it may be known to Zoologists. When you have done with the picture, will you have the goodness to return it to Messrs. Colnaghi.' The picture is discussed at length on pp.14-5 of the present work and is apparently by Jean Groeimare and dated 1627. It includes an image of a Dodo that was copied and reproduced as a wood-engraved vignette illustration on p.14. BM(NH) III,p.1491; Nissen IVB 703; Wood p.509. Georg von FRAUENFELD (1807-1873). Neu aufgefundene Abbildung der Dronte und eines zweiten kurzflügeligen Vogels, wahrscheinlich des Poule Rouge au Bec de Bécasse de Maskarenen... Vienna: M. Salzer, 1868. 2° (463 x 350mm). 2 mounted chromolithographs, 2 uncoloured lithographic plates. (Light soiling to margin of title, some spotting, blank margins of plates torn and repaired.) Old speckled boards (extremities rubbed, modern endpapers). FIRST EDITION OF 'ONE OF THE BEST ACCOUNTS OF THE DODO' (Wood). The colour plates reproduce paintings of the Dodo and another extinct flightless bird. The painting of the Dodo is believed to have been painted from life of an example in the menagerie of Rudolf II.
