(Gutter of half-title soiled). Original red cloth, g.e. (rebacked with original spine laid down, fore-corners worn); quarter green morocco folding box. Provenance : George M. Williamson, turn-of-the-century American Carroll collector whose 1865 Alice is now at Harvard (long note by him in ink on half-title regarding the differences between the 1865 first issue and this 1866 second issue of Alice ); early bookseller's catalogue description pasted on rear endpaper; DeWitt Miller (bookplate at inside rear cover); an anecdotal note regarding the 1865 Alice and Gabriel Wells in an unknown hand on an oblong octavo slip laid in. FIRST EDITION, second (i.e., American) issue, comprising sheets of the suppressed 1865 printing of Alice with new title page; the variant (no priority) with the "B" in "By" slightly to the right of the "T" in "Tenniel" on title-page and without the hyphen in "Rabbit-Hole" on Contents page.
