Do Quang Em was born in Ninh Thuan and graduated from the École des Arts Appliqués de Gia Đinh in 1942.
Em was a remarkable artist renowned for the quality and clarity of his realistic paintings. His naturalistic still lifes evoke the styles of Caravaggio and Rembrandt, with subtle hints of the old Dutch masters. Realism is not a prevalent style in Vietnam, and Em's paintings illustrate the highly individualistic work of contemporary Vietnamese artists.
His work emphasises the significance of both his subjects and the use of space surrounding them. His most frequently painted subjects included still lifes, often featuring teapots and cups, as well as portraits of women. Notably, his portraits frequently featured his wife and daughter, capturing them with an extraordinary mastery of light and shadow.
