Being a Record of some Remarkable Extinct Species and a Plea for some Threatened Forms'; 'The Story of the Birds. Being an Introduction to the Study of Ornithology', 1892-94-97-1900, xvi 274, [1] viii 260, vii 221, 257 leaves, feint-ruled paper, written on rectos only in blue ink, frequent autograph corrections, additional pencil annotations presumably by the printer, a few old tape-repairs, spotting to endpapers and binder's blanks, printer's finger-marks to margins and versos, top edges gilt, near-contemporary uniform red half morocco, 4to (25.5 x 19.6 cm) (Qty: 4) Provenance: 1) Sotheby's London, 22 May 1950; 2) H. Charles Dixon (1858-1926) was a Sheffield-based ornithologist who spent several years collecting specimens and field notes for Henry Seebohm, and discovered new species including the St Kilda Wren. Wood describes Migration as 'An interesting and popular work' and notes of The Story of the Birds: 'This interesting, popular work ... is an intelligent account of avian ascent, followed by various studies of the developed bird'. These holograph manuscripts appear to have been used as the printer's setting copies.
