DION Chrysostomus (c. 40-after 111). Orationes LXXX , in Greek. Venice: Aldine press for Federico Torresano [1551]. 8° (163 x 100mm). Aldine dolphin-and-anchor device on title, woodcut ornamental initials. Sheet III folded inversely so that the leaf order is III2,1,4,3,6,5,,8,7. (Faint dampstain at hinge, visible only in a few quires, printed shoulder notes on C3r just shaved.) Contemporary German blindtooled pigksin over bevelled wooden boards, panelled with heads-in-medallion rolls, spine painted grey-white and lettered, 6-leaf quire of blank paper added at front and 6- and 8-leaf quires at back (without clasps, slightly soiled, lower corner slightly worn). Provenance : Hieronymus Wolf (b. Oettingen, 1516-1580; Augsburg philologist and city librarian, inscription on pastedown dated 20 February 1567) -- annotated throughout in Greek, possibly by Wolf, and with MS index on final quires of blank leaves) -- Johannes Fugger (gift inscription to anonymous recipient on pastedown; see below) -- Richard Heber (stamp on flyleaf, sale part II, 1834, lot 1615). EDITIO PRINCEPS. The Greek annotations may be by the German classical and Byzantine scholar, Hieronymus Wolf. Editor of Isocrates and Demosthenes, Wolf served as secretary and librarian to the Fugger family from 1551 to 1557, before becoming city librarian and head of the Protestant school at Augsburg. In 1563 he acquired on behalf of the city a group of 32 Greek manuscripts and, later the same year, he spent 454 guilders on books at the Frankfurt book fair. In addition to Wolf's ownership of the present volume, an inscription records that it was given by Johannes Fugger to an anonymous recipient in place of a copy of 'Ars poetica' by Robortelli (presumably Robortelli's Greek-Latin edition of Aristotle's De arte poetica , printed at Florence in 1548), which his guest 'Cameranus' had taken. An edition of Dion's orations appears among the Greek books owned by the Fugger family (cf. P. Lehmann, Fuggerbibliotheken , p.86). Although undated, the edition matches other Greek works printed at the Aldine press for Federico Torresano between 1550 and 1554; Botfield pointed out in his Praefatio (p.459) that the preface is addressed to Ridolfo Pio da Carpi as cardinal, before he was elevated to the bishophric in 1553, giving it a terminus ante quem .
