Paris: Moreau le Jeune, 1785-1790. 2 volumes, 4° (276 x 201mm). Four double-page engraved maps by Tardieu, and 161 (of 163?) engraved plates by Le Bas after Moreau le Jeune with engraved text beneath, most consecutively numbered to 164 with 1 bis, last 12 plates in the principal volume unnumbered. 2nd vol. with engraved dedication to the king by Garnier and Moreau. (Margins spotted.) 1st vol: contemporary French crimson morocco gilt, covers with Greek key pattern border, spine directly lettered in one panel, the other five with repeated fleuron enclosed by a pointillé lozenge and corner sprays, gilt edges (upper cover slightly scuffed, spine lightly rubbed and with tiny hole at head). 2nd vol: contemporary red half morocco, gilt spine (corners rubbed). Provenance : J.J. de Bure l'aîné (collation note, dated 18 July 1826, in both vols.) -- Robert Hoe -- Cortlandt F. Bishop -- Francis Kettaneh (with their ex-libris). Moreau's engravings originally appeared in 16 parts. Cohen/de Ricci state that the true author of the engraved text was not the abbé Garnier but Dingé who likewise wrote the Discours . The title-page in this copy is a variant, and both the half-title and title are on shorter paper. The Discours is bound in first and has the imprint 'de l'Imprimerie de Monsieur, 1790'. The supplementary volume has no title and apart from the dedication only contains plates 143-164. Cohen/de Ricci 737, calling for 166 numbered plates; Ray, French , 53. (2)
