Stuttgart, 1593 and Strassburg: heirs of Bernhard Jobin 1594. 2 volumes, broadsheets (353 x 273 mm). Etched title within etched border, 38 etched plates (numbered 1-35 and 38-40; 36 and 37 were never issued). (Margin of plate 5 torn away along plate edge, marginal dampstaining and minor worming to inner margin at beginning.) Title of part two with an etched border in printed in black and the title printed in red, 58 etched plates (first plate a half-page illustration, others full-page). (Plate 33, 37 with marginal tear touching image, plates 30-32 with minor loss to blank corner, some minor browning or staining.) Contemporary German silver-tooled vellum (oxidized, some staining). Provenance : Joseph Hennston (1814 inscription); Franciscus Xaverius Schwarz (bookplate); pencil drawings on seven blank pages at end; acquired from Irving Zucker Art Books, 1965. FIRST EDITION, first issue with the text in German. Fowler observes that "the plates depict the most fantastic designs in the most lurid taste which show, for the most part, no regard for the possibility of execution in any building material." Dietterlin's celebrated collection of "designs of great originality" (Fairfax Murray) immediately inspired designers of the 17th century, and was again embraced as an important reference during the 19th-century revival across Europe.
