A PASSAGE FROM DAVID COPPERFIELD An evocative excerpt from the novel, which had been published in serial form in 1849-1850: "'But he led me to the shore. And on that part of it where she and I looked for shells, two children -- on that part of it where some lighter fragments of the old boat, blown down last night, had been scattered by the wind -- among the ruins of the house he had wronged -- I saw him lying with his head on his arm, as I had often seen him lie at school.' (David Copperfield)." The text is the concluding passage of Chapter LVI "Tempest," in which David watches helplessly while his friend, Ham Peggoty, plunges into the storm-tossed sea to rescue a sailor trapped on a shipwrecked ship, and is himself drowned.
