Half-titles, wood-engraved frontispiece and 39 wood engravings after Marcus Stone by Dalziel and W.T. Green. Original green pictorial printed wrappers (4 parts with soft vertical folding crease, some wrappers lightly soiled or chipped); green morocco pull-off case gilt. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS, first issue of part 1 without the printer's imprint on front wrapper, part 10 with page 13 in the Mutual Friend Advertiser printed "31", and with the scarce slip addressed to the reader. The "Our Mutual Friend Advertiser" in each part and other inserted advertisements as listed in Hatton and Cleaver with the following exceptions: part one with Fry's Homoeopathic Cocoa ad printed on lemon (not pink) paper, part 2 with Fry's Trinidad Rock Cocoa ad printed on lemon (not orange) paper, part 3 with second "Cornhill Magazine" slip bound in, Part 8 lacking the Chapman & Hall advertisement, part 14 lacking the Economic Life Assurance Society ad, and part 18 with a duplicate Norton's Camomile ad and lacking the Mappin ad.
