Beschreibung:

Autograph letter signed with initials to Wilkie Collins, mysteriously referring to a week's absence from Paris and on the success of his readings in Paris.
Paris, 20 January 1863. 1 1/2 pages, on a single sheet of blue paper (approximately 8 x 5 inches, 200 x 130 mm). Nicely framed with a portrait. “I dare say you have been expecting to hear from me before now. I know that I have been meaning to write before now, but have been unsettled and made uncertain by ‘circumstances over which _’ &c &c &c. The same circumstances (generally claimed under this novel description, but serious enough, as you shall know one day) take me from Paris this evening for a week...My absence is entre nous...The French look to the Copperfield reading so astoundingly that I am obliged to read twice more...” The charity readings referred to in this letter took place at the British Embassy. The absence was likely a trip to Condette to see Ellen Terny.
