DESPORTES, PHILIPPE. Les sept pseaumes de David, mis en vers françois [--Poesies chrestiennes-- Quelques prieres & meditations chrestiennes]. Paris: Mamert Patisson 1598. 3 vols. in one, 8vo, 168 x 97mm. (6 5/8 x 3 13/16in.), contemporary brown morocco, covers richly gilt in the Duodo style, outer border of leafy sprays, inner floral border, central panel containing 18 oval medallions, each decorated with a flower or Holy Ghost tool, at center a large blank oval stained dark brown, g.e., joints and extremities rubbed, upper inner hinge cracked, a few leaves a bit soiled, occasional minor marginal staining. RULED IN RED THROUGHOUT, printer's woodcut device on titles, italic type. BM/STC, p. 61. During his service as Venetian Ambassador to the court of Henry IV from 1594-97, Pietro Duodo had approximately 150 books bound in a Parisian atelier in the style of the present binding, with his gilt arms and device occupying the large central ovals. The tools on this binding appear to be reverse copies of those on Duodo bindings reproduced in Devauchelle (I, pl. 57), in the Esmerian catalogue (part 1, 6 June 1972, lots 59-61), and elsewhere. Provenance : Boissard, ink stamp on title -- Robert Hoe, bookplate .
