Desmond Eagar library. Eight titles published by J.W. Arrowsmith of Bristol from the collection of Desmond Eagar, Captain of Hampshire C.C.C. and noted cricket collector. Each volume very nicely and uniformly bound for Eagar by Bernard Middleton in blue half morocco with marbled boards, gilt title and two raised bands to spines. Top edges gilt. Titles bound with original paper wrappers preserved are 'Told in the Pavilion', Alfred Cochrane, 1896. Includes a typed letter slipped in from Middleton to Eagar dated 17th July 1960 relating to the binding of this set of books, very nicely signed 'Bernard C. Middleton'. 'How's That? Including a century of Grace', Harry Furniss 1896. 'The County Cricket Championship 1873 to 1896', Rev. R.S. Holmes, 1897. 'Cricket Notes', Gilbert Jessop, 1903. 'Cricket Stories Wise and Otherwise', C.W. Alcock, 1901. 'At the Sign of the Wicket', E.B.V. Christian, 1894. 'Ranjitsinhji. Prince of Cricket', Percy Cross Standing, 1903. Also 'Willow & Leather. A Book of Praise', E.V. Lucas, 1898, lacking original wrappers. Bookplate of E.D.R. Eagar to front cover of each title. The set previously sold as lot 158 in the Christie's sale of Eagar's library, 21st April 2005. An excellent selection of books from the renowned binder. VG
