(Design at Home with Mark Hill - Pure Evil Gallery, London, 7th April 2019) Giovanni Schoeman (1940-1981) South African a 1960s-70s 'cold cast resin metal' three-dimensional relief of three figures together under the sun, mounted on hessian covered board, in a brass frame, frame 63cm high, 47.5cm wide. One of Schoeman's sculptures was used in the first series of MadMen and notable collectors include Sylvester Stallione. He began his work in West Hampstead, London, and later moved to Los Angeles where he was murdered by a hitman mysteriously. Schoeman used a technique developed in the 1960s where metal powder was set within a resin binder. His 'cold cast bronze', is a compound made up of just over 85% of bronze powder and around 15% resin, which was poiured into a mould. Other metal powders may also be used instead of, or in combination with, the bronze powder. Once moulded, the remaining cavity was filled with plain resin to give weight and stability. The visual effect is that the piece is made from bronze.
