DescriptionSu XianzhongPaper Med No.142020蘇獻忠 《紙系列之十四》 2020年作 德化白瓷及磚
Dehua porcelain and brick, signed with two seals of the artist
Height 37 cm, 14½ in.Condition reportFor further information on the condition of this lot please contact Chinese.London@sothebys.com Catalogue noteBorn in 1968, Su Xianzhong is an established artist from a long line of respected traditional Dehua Blanc de Chine sculptors and the fourth generation of the famed ‘Yun Yu Porcelain Studio’. This was established by his great grandfather Su Xuejin (1869 - 1919), also known as Bo Ji Yu Ren, who won a gold medal at the Panama - Pacific International Exposition, the world fair held in San Francisco, California, USA from 20th February to 4th December 1915.

Over the last 30 years, Su has pushed the boundaries of the material and tradition, creating a unique style of porcelain with both the essence of tradition and bold contemporary symbolic form. The 'Paper' series is created by applying clay to fine gauze layer upon layer, which is then manipulated into the desired shape and allowed to dry. After the clay is high fired, the surface gives the appearance of smooth paper. The firebrick that acts as the base had been used in lining the tunnel kilns in the Dehua State porcelain factory which closed down years ago. By incorporating the firebrick, Su created a new work that is powerful and beautiful piece from a failed state enterprise.

Su’s works are widely collected by museums around the world, including China, Korea, Singapore and most recently by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
