DescriptionProperty from a European Private Collection
Herman SaftlevenRotterdam 1609 - 1685 UtrechtA mountainous wooded river landscape, with travellers on a path and a wooden bridge
signed with monogram and dated lower left: HS f 1645oil on canvasunframed: 152 x 183.1 cm.; 59⅞ x 72⅛ in.framed: 165.6 x 196.9 cm.; 65¼ x 77½ in.Condition reportThe canvas is lined, the paint surface is covered in fairly old slightly discoloured varnish. The surface is slightly worn in the sky, and old retouchings are visible to the naked eye, predominantly scattered in the sky. Minute details in the foliage and in the foreground are well-preserved. There are minor retouchings visible to the naked eye in the lower foreground, but no major damages. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings, particularly in the sky, most concentrated in the upper right corner of the canvas. There are minor retouchings visible in the lower half of the composition, including areas on the right-hand margin, and in the lower left corner of the canvas. There is evidence of minor strengthening in some of the foliage on the left-hand side. The painting is in overall good condition.
