DescriptionProperty from a Distinguished Spanish Private Collection
Herri met de BlesBouvines circa 1510 - after 1550 Antwerp (?)Landscape with Saint Jerome
oil on oak panelunframed: 27.5 x 37 cm.; 10⅞ x 14½ in.framed: 41.5 x 51 cm.; 16¼ x 20 in.Condition reportThe following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Met de Bles Landscape with St. Jerome Oil on panel, in a painted wood frame in good condition The oak support is flat and well preserved and evenly chamfered; it has a horizontal central join. Historic worm damage to the top half of the panel has been conserved. Raking light shows the paint layer to be slightly raised but stable. There is a small repaired paint loss to the lower right corner. Under u-v light a scattering of minor restorations can be detected across the sky, corresponding to the worm damage to the reverse. The paint layer is generally very well preserved. The paint texture through the tree foliage is intact and subtle modulations to the atmospheric perspective are extant. Some of the paint to the rocky out crop, left, appears thin and horizontal brush work is visible; some of the more subtle 'top note' glazing has been compromised, here. Many fine details are intact and the painting presents well.
