DescriptionPieter CoopseHoorn circa 1640 - 1673Dutch frigates and other shipping off Vlissingen
signed with initials on the ship’s flag: PCoil on canvasunframed: 99 x 135 cm.; 39 x 53 in.framed: 128.7 x 163.5 cm.; 50⅝ x 64⅜ in.Condition reportThe canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is discoloured. Some areas of discoloured retouching are visible to the naked eye, particularly in raking light, in the dark clouds, upper left, in the sky, upper right, to a couple of patches in the dark waves, lower right, and in the sky between the ships, right of centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light further reveals areas of wash retouching throughout the sky, possibly to lessen the appearance of the canvas weave, which has become more apparent in certain areas. The ships and sea appear to be largely untouched, with a handful of retouchings in the man-of-war. In overall fairly good condition.
