Description: Rare Musical Theater Automaton by Gustave Vichy, c. 1895 With bisque head impressed "Eden Bébé, Paris, 12, Déposé", open mouth with inset upper teeth, fixed blue paperweight eyes, pierced ears, antique curly blonde mohair wig on cork pate, papier-mâché hands holding miniature theater with original gold satin curtains, the other resting on basket with articulated lid, the three-air going-barrel movement contained in the torso, dressed in original drop-waist couturier costume of burgundy silk-satin with ruched back, bead decoration, chenille-trimmed collar and (later) matching bonnet, ht. 29 in. (75 cm ), with brass 'acorn' stop/start and steel key stamped "G.V.", minor wig pulls, slight rub on nose and right eyebrow, hands repainted. - Provenance: ex-collection of the Mary Merritt Doll Museum, Pennsylvania. - Included in the lot is a 1973 postcard of the automaton in the museum. - A similar model was advertised in the 1884 catalog of the department store Au Louvre at the then astounding price of 290 Francs, almost ten times the cost of a luxury doll and twenty times as expensive as a manivelle toy of the period! - The figure looks from side to side and lifts her right arm to throw kisses as the basket lid opens, apparently unassisted, to reveal a black-and-white kitten waving its paw. She then nods her head to the right as the theater curtain raises to disclose a miniature acrobat turning circles upon a trapeze. Good working order. - A wonderful Vichy automaton with magical props that take on a life of their own! Watch & Listen on: ------------------------------- Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Magisches Musik-Puppentheater von Gustave Vichy, um 1895 Biskuitporzellankopf, geprägt mit "Eden Bébé, Paris, 12, Déposé", offener Mund mit eingesetzter oberer Zahnreihe, feststehende blaue Paperweight-Augen, durchstochene Ohrläppchen, gelockte, blonde Mohairperücke auf Korkplatte, Hände aus Papiermaché. In dem linken Arm hält die Puppe ein Miniatur-Theater mit goldenen Satinvorhängen, der rechte Arm ruht auf einem Körbchen mit Deckel. Original-Bekleidung, Haute-Couture-Kostüm aus burgunderfarbenem Seidensatin, mit tiefer Taille, gerüschtem Rücken, Perlendekoration, mit Chenille-Gewebe besetzter Kragen, dazu passendes Häubchen (ergänzt), Gesamthöhe 75 cm. Eichelförmiger Starthebel, Schlüssel geprägt "G.V.", Perücke etwas zerzupft, leichter Abrieb an der Nase und an der rechten Augenbraue, Hände neu bemalt. Mechanik und Drei-Melodien-Spielwerk befinden sich im Korpus der Puppe. - Die Dame schaut nach rechts und links, hebt den rechten Arm, um Küsse zu werfen, der Korb öffnet sich, anscheinend selbständig, und ein Kätzchen mit winkender Pfote erscheint unter dem Deckel. Die Puppe neigt ihren Kopf zum Theater, der Vorgang geht auf, und ein Miniatur-Akrobat führt seine Künste am Trapez vor. Gut funktionierender Zustand! - Provenienz: Ehemalige Sammlung Mary Merritt Doll Museum, Pennsylvania, USA. Ein ähnliches Modell wurde 1884 in dem Kaufhaus-Katalog "Au Louvre" für den erstaunlichen Preis von 290 Francs angeboten, der 10fache Preis von Luxuspuppen und der 20fache Preis von zeitgenössischem Manivelle-Spielzeug. - Ein wundervoller Vichy-Automat mit zauberhaftem Eigenleben!
