Der Architectur furnembsten, notwendigsten…. Nuremberg: Gabriel Heyn, 1558. Three parts in one volume. *4, A-BB4; Aa-Mm4, AA-LL4; a-n4; A-E4, AA-CC4. Illustrated with 329 woodcuts printed from 301 blocks (one block is used 7 times, one 3 times, and 18 twice each), many of which are full-page, by Peter Flötner Hans Brosamer and Virgil Solis, and full-page elaborated printer's woodcut device at colophon, title in red and black, woodcut initials. Folio (307 x 194 mm). Early full pigskin, boards paneled and decorated in blind, with sequences of foliations, cherubs, and medallions with the impression of the faces of Erasmus of Rotterdam, and Jan Hus, among other Humanists, “Architektur” inscribed on upper cover, armorial medallion combining the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire (following Virgil Solis’s design) and Saint Peter’s keys from the Vatican City’s flag, stamped in gilt on upper cover, spine in compartments, one of which is lettered in ink, decorated brass clasps, a3 short and possibly supplied from another copy, light toning and scattered faint spotting throughout the text, otherwise internally clean, some stray marks and wear to extremities, lacking one clasp lid, overall a very good copy. Fine edition of one of the foremost illustrated books of the mid-sixteenth century. Ryff, a German surgeon renowned for his publications on pharmaceutical medicine, adapted or translated here the work of Niccolò Tartaglia’s Quesiti et Invenzioni Diverse (Venice, 1546), a treatise on artillery, fortification, and applied mathematics. Ryff is remembered as one of the most important 16th century agents in the spread of scientific knowledge throughout the German-speaking countries. The design and execution of the woodcuts that illustrate this work are attributed to Peter Flötner [1490-1549], Hans Brosamer [1500-1554], and Virgil Solis [1514-1562], known as the three Northern masters. The woodcuts herein designed by Virgil Solis are famous for the realistic human proportions and the infinite details in the vegetation. Adams R-986. BM STC German, p. 763. See illustration.
