The Floating Church of the Redeemer, Philadelphia. Built by Clement Dennington of New York for the Churchmens Association for Seamen of the Port of Philadelphia.
New York: W. M. Endicott& Co., c. 1847-1851. Tinted lithograph (610 x 475 mm). Condition: light dampstain and tear to lower margin below writing, edges chipped, some small creases in the image. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. This unusual lithograph depicts the "Floating Church of the Redeemer" which was built in Bordentown, New Jersey in 1847 and was stationed at Philadelphia's busy Dock Street wharf until 1851. The church is considered to be the first of its kind on the east coast, predating a similar one docked in New York harbour by three years. Built by the Churchmens Association for Seamen, a branch of the Episcopal Church, the church was designed to serve sailors. Towed to Camden in 1851, the floating church sat at the corner of Broadway and Rayden Streets where it was used under the name St. John's before burning a few years later. Not in Wainwright.
