With final blank leaf. Aldine device A8 on both titles. Greek type 3 (second casting) and Roman 6:89. 3- to 7-line initials. Pages ruled in red. (Light browning, a little heavier in upper margins and final two text leaves.) 18th-century French red morocco gilt, triple fillet border on sides, spine gilt and lettered in two compartments, red overlay tooled with Gulston crest in 5th compartment, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (discreet repairs to hinges and corners); 19th-century morocco-edged slipcase (lightly worn at extremities). Provenance : early annotations in Greek (occasionally trimmed) -- Nicolas Havern ?Louciet, 1711 (inscription washed from title) -- Denis Godefroy (armorial bookplate; by descent to his son:) -- [Jean Godefroy (d. 1746; not in his sale Paris, 28 February 1746)] -- Joseph Gulston, Ealing Grove, Middlesex (1745-86; binding; sale Compton, 8 May 1783). Second edition, reprinting the editio princeps of 1504, including the date. Aldus stated in the 1504 edition that he printed it in a small number of copies, and it is presumably owing to that initial small print-run that the present reprint was issued. The greatest of the Athenian orators, Demosthenes was studied by Cicero, and Quintilian exhorted students of rhetoric not only to study but to commit to memory his speeches.
