DELAUNE, Etienne ( circa 1519-1583) Les Sciences (Robert-Dumesnil IX, 340-45; Guilmard 5; Berlin Kat. 4513) the complete set of six engravings, before 1572-73, fine impressions of these rare prints, without watermarks, trimmed inside the platemark but outside the borderline and text, just to the text in places, some occasional pale foxing, otherwise in good condition, all hinged onto wove album sheets, in a modern vellum binding Overall: 8¾ x 5 7/8 in. (222 x 148 mm.) Sheets: 2 7/8 x 2¼ in. (73 x 57 mm.) Provenance : Acquired from August Laube, in 1993. These six plates show allegorical figures representing the sciences of physics, theology, jurisprudence, dialectics, rhetoric and astromony, surrounded by groteques rendered in tiny, virtuoso detail.
