DELAUNAY, Robert (1885-1941, illustrator) & Joseph DELTEIL (1894-1978). Allo! Paris! . Paris: L'Imprimerie du Livre for Éditions de Quatre Chemins, [1926]. 4° (284 x 230mm). Lithographic frontispiece and 19 lithographic plates by and after Delaunay, printed by Engelmann. (Scattered light spotting on text.) Original printed wrappers, glassine dustwrapper (wrappers slightly faded on spine and lightly spotted, minor creasing, block split, tears causing small losses on dustwrapper). Provenance : sale, Sotheby's London, 21 November 1983, lot 67. FIRST EDITION. LIMITED TO 365 COPIES, THIS NUMBER 236 OF 300 ON PAPIER D'ARCHES . Delaunay's remarkable series of illustrations for his friend Delteil's book: 'Whereas some of the lithographs are straightforward pictorial views of Paris, others, such as the Eiffel Tower and St. Séverin, are tensely Cubist in character, recalling Delaunay's paintings of these subjects in 1909-1912' ( The Artist & the Books 1860-1960 ). Some of the most striking images are those of the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of the modern that Delaunay returned to throughout his life in his work (and also his book illustration; for example, see Vicente Huidobro's poem Tour Eiffel (Madrid: 1918), with an image of the subject by Delaunay for the upper cover). The Artist & the Book 1860-1960 72; Johnson Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000 53; Stein Libri cubisti 9.
