Delaunay's remarkable series of illustrations for his friend Delteil's book: 'Whereas some of the lithographs are straightforward pictorial views of Paris, others, such as the Eiffel Tower and St. Séverin, are tensely Cubist in character, recalling Delaunay's paintings of these subjects in 1909-1912' ( The Artist & the Books 1860-1960 ). Some of the most striking images are those of the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of the modern that Delaunay returned to throughout his life in his work (and also his book illustration; for example, see Vicente Huidobro's poem Tour Eiffel (Madrid: 1918), with an image of the subject by Delaunay for the upper cover).
