DEAN & SON MOVEABLES -- The Royal Punch & Judy as Played before the Queen at Windsor Castle & the Crystal Palace, London: Dean & Sons, [c.1861]. Small 2° (290 x 183mm). 8 hand-coloured wood-engraved plates, each with moveable parts operated by tabs. (A few parts missing or defective.) Original coloured pictorial wrappers (rubbed and scuffed, corners worn). With 3 other moveable books published by Dean & Son, The Moveable Mother Hubbard (London, [c.1857]), Cock Robin (London, [n.d.]) and Old Woman and her Silver Penny (London, [n.d.]), all with some defects. Dean & Son were highly innovative publishers. They were amongst the first to use lithography in children's books and to produce untearable books printed on linen. They were also pioneers in producing "moveables". The four examples above are amongst their earliest. (4)
