"De to hunde (The Two Dogs). Signed P.I. 91. Bronze, partly coated with 23 ct. gold leaf. Each H. 63 cm. (2) The sculptures are only made in two examples and have never been offered for sale before. The second pair has been placed at the ferry landing in Nordby Harbour on Fanø as a gift from the New Carlsberg Foundation on the occasion of the 250th anniversary for the Fanø residents' purchase of the island on 10 July 1741. In the late 1800s, Staffordshire dogs were popular souvenirs among Danish sailors when they were in an English port looking for a popular gift to take home with them. The faience dogs gradually became a fixture in many homes of sailors and were also widely used in the rest of Denmark. The dogs stood in the windowsill, looking out upon the world when the sailor was away, and looking into the living room when he was home. Isbak's modern interpretation of the figures can particularly be seen in the alternative use of gold leaf, which removes the somewhat old-fashioned look, which many associate with the traditional Staffordshire figures.
