Rarissime édition originale de ce traité littéraire et philosophique sur la sculpture, abordant de multiples domaines dont la physiognomonie, l'esthétique et la perspective. Composé par le poète humaniste Pomponius Gauricus (vers 1471-1530), avec la participation de son frère Lucas Gauricus (1476-1558), mathématicien, astrologue et auteur prolifique, il s'agit du premier livre imprimé décrivant les principes de la perspective. Ce petit ouvrage rencontra un grand succès éditorial en Europe et fut publié en 1528 à Anvers, à Nuremberg en 1542 et 1547 (première traduction allemande), et enfin réédité aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. “Pomponius Gauricus, a humanist from Padua where Donatello had worked for some ten years, wrote a treatise on the art of sculpture that was published in 1504. He narrated a “well known” story about a distinguished young visitor who wished to catch a glimpse of Donatello's abacus'; that is to say he hoped to see the device with which Donatello controlled the mathematics in his works” (Kemp, p. 40).
