De orbis situ libri tres, accuratissime emendati, una' cum commentariis Ioachimi Vadiani ... Mit 2 Holzschnitt-Titelbordüren d. Monogrammisten HF (Hans Franck) u. vielen Holzschn.-Initialen. Basel, Cratander, 1522. a1-z4, A1-G4, A1-H3 (220 S., 1 S.), 1 Bl., Aa1-Gg5. 4°. Brauner Kalbsleder d. Zt. auf Holzdeckeln, mit 2 Schließen (erneuert), Streicheisenlinien, Mittellestuck mit floralen Plattenstempeln u. Rollenstempel mit Ornamentbändern, diese gefüllt mit Kandelaber, Horn, Trommel und vegetabilen Füllornamenten (vgl. zu diesem Motiv: EBDB r001584, die Einbanddatenbank datiert diese Rollenstempel in die erste Hälfte des 16. Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Second of the editions edited by the Swiss humanist, physician and cosmographer Vadianus (Joachim Vadian). - The editio princeps by Mela was published in Milan in 1471, the first critical edition was by Vadianus. The present edition contains the "Loca aliquot", in which Vadianus criticises the outdated views of Johannes Camertus, and the letter to Rudolph Agricola with the suggestion, first made by Martin Waldseemüller, to call the Mundus Novus "America" after Amerigo Vespucci (Ff5 recto). Also included is an account of the first ascent of Mount Pilatus near Lucerne. - The title border, signed "1519 HF", is attributed to Hans Franck. It shows the figure of "Hercules Gallicus" below the title, the figures of Lucretia on the left and Judith on the right. The text of Mela is surrounded by comments in smaller type. - As in most copies, the large world map is missing. - Brown calf on wooden boards with 2 clasps (renewed), with rich blind tooling showing floral motivs, candelabra, horn, drum and vegetal ornaments (some worming, front joint slightly chipped, corners worn. - In some places slightly brown- or waterstained. P. 89 torn. Some pages with old marginalia. Pastedown endpapers caché with incunabula pages with initials in fleuronné a. manuscript annotations in textura.
