David Burliuk (Ukrainian/American, 1882-1967) Flowers in Cuba Signed, inscribed and dated "BURLiUK/1955/CUBA" l.l., identified on a label from A.C.A. Gallery, New York, on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 22 x 18 in. (55.9 x 45.7 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, minor surface grime. Provenance: Purchased from the artist, through to the present owner by family descent, Massachusetts. N.B. The present work is from David Burliuk's Still Life period (roughly 1940s to 1960s) and painted in the spirit of Van Gogh whom Burliuk greatly admired. (1) According to Myroslav Shkandrij, Burliuk's still lifes from this time "are his last tribute to natural beauty and the mysterious powers of the earth" showing that he was "in the end, a worshipper of the earth's abundance and glory as much as a Futurist scandalizer of public taste." (2) (1) Shkandrij, Myroslav. Beyond Futurism: David Burliuk 1882-1967, April 24 to July 20, 2008 [Exh. Cat.]. The Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, 2008, pg. 17 (2) Ibid.
