Beschreibung:

David Burliuk (Ukrainian/American, 1882-1967) Flowers by the Shore Signed and dated "BurLiuk./1950." l.r. Oil on canvas, 36 x 33 3/4 in. (91.4 x 85.7 cm), framed. Condition: Alligatoring, lifting, craquelure, scattered losses, minor surface grime. Provenance: Private Manhattan collection, from 1950s to 1969; by family descent to a private Burlington, Vermont, collection to 2007, by family descent to a private Massachusetts collection. N.B. The present work is from David Burliuk's Still Life period (roughly 1940s to 1960s) and painted in the spirit of Van Gogh whom Burliuk greatly admired. (1) According to Myroslav Shkandrij, Burliuk's still lifes from this time "are his last tribute to natural beauty and the mysterious powers of the earth" showing that he was "in the end, a worshipper of the earth's abundance and glory as much as a Futurist scandalizer of public taste." (2) (1) Shkandrij, Myroslav. Beyond Futurism: David Burliuk 1882-1967, April 24 to July 20, 2008 [Exh. Cat.]. The Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, 2008, pg. 17 (2) Ibid.
