The Descent of Man, and selection in relation to sex , London: John Murray 1871. 2 volumes, 8°, half titles, wood-engraved illustrations, publisher's catalogue at end of each volume (half titles and publisher's catalogue spotted, occasional light stains to lower margin of vol. II), original green cloth, gilt lettered spines (head and tail of spines chipped, inner hinges of vol. I cracked, extremities and covers somewhat rubbed), top edges uncut. Provenance : H. O. Holmes, Southwold, ownership inscription on verso of free endpapers. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with "transmitted" appearing as the first word on p. 297 in volume I, the errata on verso of second title and Darwin's note on "a serious and unfortunate error" in volume II. 2,500 copies of the first issue were printed. GM170; Norman 599. With a later edition of Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology or the modern changes of the earth and its inhabitants (2 vols., London, 1872) in contemporary calf, and William Mavor's The Lady's and Gentleman's Botanical Pocket Book (London, ca. 1800) in recent morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe.
