Uncut in original blue cloth, blind-panelled covers, spine lettered in gilt (front inner hinges slightly split). Provenance: William Brown Edinburgh (bookseller's label). FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, printed from the same sheets as volume III of Fitzroy's Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's ships Adventure and Beagle , but with preliminaries [i-iv] cancelled and [v-vi] discarded. The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species . London: John Murray 1877. 8° (Z4 torn at margin), original green cloth (spine frayed at head and a little darkened). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO WILLIAM OGLE (1827-1912) with publisher's printed slip, 'FROM THE AUTHOR', the name 'W. Ogle' inscribed on slip in pencil in Darwin's hand. A physician and naturalist, and Superintendent of Statistics to the Registrar-General, Ogle is particularly remembered for having facetiously advised Darwin to read the Origin of Species . He wrote to his friend on 23 July 1876, recounting his observations on the ways bees perforate flowers for white and blue varieties of monkshood. Over a year later, on 21 August 1877, he wrote to thank Darwin for sending Forms of Flowers , also suggesting that plant hairs protect them from insects either mechanically or by stinging.
