Folding wood-engraved plate, wood-engravings in the text (one or two spots). Original dark plum cloth decorated in blind with vertical lines and fine gilt block orchid stamped on upper cover [Freeman second issue binding variant], brown coated endpapers, uncut. Provenance: Marianne North (1830-1890), English naturalist and botanical artist (signature on title); John Addington Symonds (1840-1893), English poet (bookplate); Howard Lehman Goodhart (bookplate). "QUITE UNIQUE - THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WHOLE RANGE OF BOTANICAL LITERATURE TO COMPARE IT WITH" (Hooker). FIRST EDITION of the first of Darwin's works to publish extensive evidence supporting his theory of Evolution through natural selection. "It will perhaps serve to illustrate how Natural History may be worked under the belief of the modification of species." (Darwin). With a fine provenance: Marianne North went to Australia at Charles Darwin's suggestion she in 1880, and for a year painted there and in New Zealand. Her gallery at Kew was opened in 1882. In 1883, after a visit by her to South Africa, an additional room was opened at the Kew gallery, and in 1884-1885 she worked at Seychelles and in Chile. It was subsequently in the library of English poet, literary critic and leading pioneer of sexual and social reform, John Addington Symonds, as well as noted collector Howard Lehman Goodhart.
