(7 7/8 x 4 7/8 in.), original green blind-stamped ripple-grained cloth, spine gilt, Freeman variant "a," uncut, brown endpapers, original binders' ticket of Edmonds & Remnants on rear pastedown, inner joints cracked, corners bruised and worn, spine extremities rubbed and creased with slight loss of gilt at foot of spine, Mudie's Library label removed from upper cover, modern morocco box case, half-title with vertical crease, old ink signature on title. FIRST EDITION, half-title, folding lithographed diagram by W. West, 32-page publishers' catalogue dated June 1859 bound in at end (Freeman state 3). Freeman 373; Grolier/Horblit 23b ("The most influential scientific work of the nineteenth century"); PMM 344(b). Provenance : Mudie's Circulating Library, ink inscription on front endpage "Of Mudie Norbo [?] 8/-" -- L. Anderson Rose, signature on title.
