(Some occasional spotting). Original publisher's blindstamped green cloth, spine gilt-decorated, by Edmonds and Remnants with their ticket at lower corner of rear pastedown (Freeman binding variant b) and with advertisements dated June 1859 (Freeman variant 3), no priority established, uncut (recased, a few skilful repairs to cloth, small inkspot on front cover). FIRST EDITION OF "THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WORK OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. Its publication aroused world-wide criticism and controversy, both religious and scientific" (Grolier/Horblit). The whole edition of 1250 copies was sold on the day of publication. "Darwin not only drew an entirely new picture of the workings of organic nature; he revolutionized our methods of thinking and our outlook on the natural order of things" (PMM).
